Allergen labelling risk starts before the packaging line
Even correctly printed packaging can carry the wrong declaration when the ingredient master or approved artwork is out of step with the product.
Understand the failure modes
Food Standards Australia New Zealand identifies packaging errors, label errors and supplier verification issues among causes of undeclared allergen recalls. These issues highlight the importance of sound product information and production controls.
Australia's Plain English Allergen Labelling rules specify how applicable allergens must appear on food labels. Manufacturers should refer to current FSANZ guidance and verify each product's requirements.
Connect ingredient and artwork approvals
When an ingredient is reformulated or changed to a new supplier, the technical team should assess the relevant finished-product specification and label. When artwork changes, it should be reviewed against the current approved product information.
A change process can capture the reason, the applicable evidence, the affected products and the effective revision before production uses the updated packaging.
- Accurate ingredient and supplier records
- Effective finished-product and packaging specifications
- Controlled label artwork revisions
- Technical, regulatory and production checks
Software is one layer of protection
SupplySpec can support linked records and controlled approvals, but production line verification, correct packaging selection and qualified allergen assessment remain essential. A software approval does not independently validate the accuracy of a label.
