Manufacturing insight

From spreadsheets to connected manufacturing records: an SME roadmap

You do not need to replace your ERP or digitise every process in one project to improve information control.

Choose the first register carefully

Start with a workflow that crosses departments or repeatedly creates rework. Supplier onboarding, technical specifications and controlled procedures are common candidates. Define the owner, required fields and the approval point before importing data.

Review existing spreadsheets and files for duplicates, outdated information and missing identifiers. An organised migration is often more valuable than a quick bulk upload.

A sensible four-phase rollout

Phase one creates a reliable controlled register. Phase two links supplier, product and specification records. Phase three adds quality and compliance workflows. Phase four improves reporting and interoperability with operational systems.

For a larger business, the same principle applies across sites or functions. Governance can be shared while deployment is staged to manage change.

  • Document and supplier register
  • Product, ingredient and packaging specifications
  • Quality, compliance and approval workflows
  • ERP interoperability and cross-site reporting

Keep the platform boundary clear

A manufacturing system of record is not the same as a financial ERP, warehouse management system or machine control platform. SupplySpec's role is governed manufacturing information and its supporting evidence, helping organisations reduce duplication without pretending to replace every specialist application.

General information only. SupplySpec supports documentation, record control and review workflows. It does not provide legal advice, independent certification or a guarantee of regulatory compliance.

Bring your manufacturing records together

Start with the modules you need and connect the records that affect your products, suppliers, quality and compliance.
